As children, most of us are taught to be kind to others. This looks like sharing what we have, speaking with respect and learning how to be a good team player.
Although this is good, it is rare that children are taught to be kind to themselves. As adults, we see the need to cultivate a kind relationship with ourselves but often do not know how to do this.
Here are 7 ways we can show kindness towards ourselves and practice self compassion.
Believe it or not, it has been proven that journaling does not only have psychological and emotional benefits, it also has a good effect on our bodies. Writing honestly and without judgment about how we feel and what we think is a good way to practice being gentle with ourselves. If you tend to be hard on yourself, we suggest you prioritise a journaling practice and develop the habit of showing yourself a little mercy.
We know nourishing the body is important for health reasons, however eating well is also a way to practice kindness. Although it is not always possible, when we eat it is good to sit and savor the moment. Give yourself time to enjoy your meal. Use it to practice gratitude for food and the way your body works. Do not over or under eat. Your body knows what it needs.
Part of being human is the need to explore our surroundings. Following our curiosity is a way to make us feel alive. It allows us to discover what may turn into a real passion and deliver unto us a sense of purpose. When we feel like our lives have purpose we are more likely to respect our time and talents.
Comparison is easy. It is also a way to be exceedingly unfair to yourself. Understanding that you can not be compared to anyone else; your life's path is unique, is the first step in cultivating a healthy self image. Putting yourself down because you are you and not another is a ridiculous way in which to show yourself unkindness. Celebrate who you are instead.
Practicing hygiene is necessary for good health but it is also a great way to give ourselves a little tender loving care. Run a bubble bath, book a massage, exfoliate, get a medi or pedi, look after your skin and teeth - these are ways to be good to your body that are also soothing to the soul.
It's amazing what a simple stroll around the block can do for your overall well being. Exercise clears the head and enhances creativity. When we are idle we stifle our potential both physically and mentally. Self kindness is giving ourselves what we need to flourish and grow.
Showing ourselves kindness includes learning how to protect our heart and mind. Being aware of what and who we listen to, and what we look at is a good place to start. Is what you are consuming really working for you? Discovering how to build healthy considered boundaries is not something we are all born knowing how to do. We learn which interactions are helpful with experience and in time.
