Joy! It is definitely our favourite three-letter word. Dictionary.com defines it as ‘the expression or display of glad feeling’, but to better illustrate the beauty of what Joy means, let’s unpack 7 beautiful quotes about Joy that are sure to bring on a severe state of happiness.
1. ‘If you carry joy in your heart, you can heal any moment.’ - Carlos Santana
All of us have experienced hard seasons. Some suffer intense psychological, emotional or physical distress. Healing is something everybody needs, although some do not identify their need for it. Joy is a healer. Joy leaves the past where it is; it is always present. Joy feeds off noticing what is good in our lives and being grateful. This beautiful quote by Carlos Santana reminds us that even broken hearts have the capacity to experience joy.
2. ‘When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving you; a joy.’ - Rumi
Ahhh, there is something so real and refreshing about these ‘Rumi’ words. Joy is found in the true expression of ourselves. When we are still, we can sense a current pulling us forward toward what brings us to life. Joy is found in following that current. It is the simple act of being aware and being willing to trust.
3. ‘Comparison is the death of joy.’ - Mark Twain
We all feel it whenever we compare our lives to others; a sinking feeling that tells us to make ourselves smaller. There is no joy in shrinking; we are here to fill our own shoes, to take up all the space we need. Joy is found in celebrating others as they fulfil their full potential while we fulfil ours. There is room enough for everyone to be themselves. There is room enough in every heart for joy.
4. ‘There are souls in this world who have the gift of finding joy everywhere and leaving it behind them when they go.’ - Frederick William Faber
Hmmm yes, we agree Mr Faber. We have encountered a few such souls, however, we believe every soul has the capacity to find joy wherever that soul may be. Joyous people are not special, anyone can decide to be joyous or more accurately, any soul can choose to look for joy. All it takes is being watchful and grateful.
5.‘Joy is not in things; it is in us.’ - Richard Wagner
We find such comfort in this quote. We love how joy can be found even in the most mediocre of circumstances. We love how joy is not reserved for only the rich or the influential, the attractive or the famous. It is in all of us. What could be more beautiful than that?
6. ‘I define joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace - a connection to what matters.’ - Oprah Winfrey
Yes O! Joy does connect us to what really matters. And to us, love is the only thing that makes sense. In fact, wherever you see love, joy can’t be too far behind. Fear on the other hand, doesn't make room for gladness. Although fear often points to what we deem to be important, love lights up and allows us to hold what is valuable while delighting in it.
7. ‘The essence of life is not in the great victories and grand failures, but in the simple joys.’ - Jonathan Lockwood Huie
Well said, Mr Huie. Simple joys are where the life is. We find pops of joy everywhere.
Our advice is don’t wait to be happy. Look for the joy in who you are.
